Horween produces Black Marbled Shell Cordovan by applying several layers of black dye onto vegetable-tanned shells and then scraping off layers of the finish to produce its marbled effect. The end result is a field of obsidian with veins and speckles of rich amber and verdigris.
Each shell is a sedimentary-like layering of blacks, honey, and sometimes green. Like a marble slab, bronze and emerald striations cut through at varying angles.
Due to the hand-processed nature of creating the marbled effect, color variation is expected. The pattern and shade will not match the photo sample. Some pairs will be amber-heavy, others green. Color variation between panels is also common and considered acceptable. This shell is the antithesis of a cookie-cutter leather.
